Automatic Truck Loading for Bagged Products: Conveyor, Depalletizer or Robot?

Most bagging lines are specified to the last kilogram of throughput, then handed to a loading bay where two people throw bags into a truck by hand. That bay quietly erases a third of the line's real capacity: it caps truck turnaround, it is where back injuries happen, and it is the one station a visitor remembers as "old-fashioned." Automatic truck loading is the cheapest capacity you can add to a line you already own — provided you pick the method that matches your bag and your volume.

The three ways to load a truck

MethodTypical rateLabourBest suited to
Telescopic / belt conveyor into truck600–1,200 bags/h0 at the truck (1 at the stacker)Single product, steady outfeed from the line
Bag depalletizer feeding the truck400–900 bags/h0Pre-palletised bags, mixed layer patterns
Articulated robot palletizer/loader500–1,000 bags/h0Complex patterns, fragile or valve bags

Belt conveyor loading: the simple workhorse

A bag loading truck conveyor takes bags straight from the line, squares them and feeds them through a telescopic belt into the truck. Because there is no pallet in the middle, it is the highest-throughput option for a single product flowing continuously to bulk outfeed. The bag lands in a neat row, the operator walks the chute back as the layer fills, and the truck leaves full instead of half-thrown. The limitation is flexibility: a plain conveyor assumes one bag type and one stack pattern, so it suits plants that ship one grade per lane.

Depalletizer loading: when bags already sit on pallets

Some operations bag, palletise, then re-handle the pallet at the truck. A bag depalletizer breaks that pallet back down and layers the bags directly into the trailer. This is the right answer when the line already palletises for warehouse storage and the truck load is simply the pallet content re-formed against the truck wall. It keeps a single handling principle end to end and removes the manual lift entirely, at the cost of a slower cycle than a direct conveyor because each bag is re-placed rather than slid.

Robot loading: pattern freedom without an operator

Where bag sizes change, where valve bags bruise, or where the customer demands a specific interlocking pattern, an automatic truck loading robot pays for itself. Driven by the same controllers used on a column palletizer, it places each bag by coordinates rather than by gravity, so a 25 kg cement bag and a 50 kg feed bag can share one cell. The trade-off is footprint and a higher first cost, but for contract packers serving several clients it is the only method that holds pattern quality at volume.

What actually sets truck turnaround time

Turnaround is decided less by the loader and more by three unglamorous things: bag squaring before the chute, a stable infeed from the bagging machine, and a driver who is not waiting on paperwork. A tubular reel bagging machine that delivers squared bags at a steady 800/h lets a conveyor loader keep the truck moving; the same loader starves if bags arrive skewed and the operator stops to fix each one. Match the loader to the line's steady rate, not its peak rate, and design the stacker to keep bags square.

Matching the method to your plant

  1. One product, one lane, bulk outfeed. A telescopic conveyor loader is fastest and cheapest.
  2. Bags already palletised for storage. A depalletizer re-forms the load in the truck with no manual lift.
  3. Several bag sizes or a demanding customer pattern. A robot loader holds quality across changeovers.
  4. Low volume with a manual line. Partial automation — a short conveyor and one stacker — removes the lift injury before you justify a full cell.

Getting the full loop right

Truck loading is the last 10% of the line but the first thing a buyer notices. Recens supplies the conveyor, depalletizer and robot options with the palletising and bagging matched upstream, so the truck leaves full, square and on time. Tell us your bag weight, truck type and hourly target and we will lay out the loading cell with its real labour saving.
